Sir:-

I have laid before the Marquess of Salisbury

your letter 4031/1900 of the 17th ultimo, relative

Λ

to the queation whether any payment should be made

to the Chinese Government on account of the public

buildings taken over in the recently acquired terri-

tory in the neighbourhood of Hongkong.

Lord Salisbury is of opinion that it is not ne-

cessary for Her Majesty's Government to make any

offer of the value of the buildings taken over, and

that, in the event of any claim being put forward

hereafter by the Chinese Government in respect of the

buildings either in the Hongkong extension or at

Wei-hai-wei, the matter might be further considered.

Under Secretary of

Colonial Office.

State,

261 72

I am,

sir,

Your most obedient,

humble servant,

Francis Bertie
